* I decided to change this so that I would get a better sense of your research as well as I would be able to help you toward your final pieces a little more (clarify things, point to some artists to look at, give you feedback before you finalize your project, etc...)

tomorrow and a heads up

First and foremost, thank you to all of you who opened up and shelled out a bit of yourselves in front of everyone. That's hip hop.

Second, a lot of people have been asking about the coming weeks so here's the run down:

. you will need a canvas stretched and prepped by yourselves for tomorrow, to paint in class
. you will need another canvas for the home assignment
. and if you would like to paint on canvas for your last assignment, you'll need one or more (depending on what you're doing) canvases.

I will go over the final presentation and project tomorrow in class.

The reading assignment is very important to your next painting. It is an excerpt from the book "Spectacular Vernaculars" by Russell A. Potter. You really need to read this joint. One hour and a half of your day, that's it!

The home assignment is to make a painting that uses pastiche and appropriation as a way of Signifyin(g) a la Potter's commentaries on hip hop, or to make a painting by combining samples from art history. Think about these works:

Pastiche as imitation, detournement:

Leonardo da Vinci

to
Basquiat

Malcom X

to
Boogie Down Productions

Caravaggio

and Holbein

to
Trenton Doyle Hancock

Velasquez

to
Francis Bacon

Picasso

to
George Condo

OR

Pastiche as "a medley of various ingredients", a sampling of art history:

David Salle

Francesca Dimattio

We only have tomorrow and 2 more weeks of class, however the last week of class is our final crits. PLEASE hand in all of your work that is late.

1. collage
2. collage painting
3. in class graffiti cropped painting
4. text painting on record covers
5. show and tell (if you were absent, email me a pdf of images)

next week assignments

next Monday

you are to bring materials related to you as if you were gathering information to make a non traditional self portrait. Here are some ideas, but do not be bound to simply these:

- internet finds that you've collected
- family background (photo, historical data, images of birth place)
- things related to your major (fabrics you've printed, sketches)

or things from your:

- spirituality
- likes and dislikes
- political stances
- food preferences
- fashion
- relationships with people
- disabilities

We will look and talk about your research after a slide presentation on artists that deal with the idea of a persona and produce work from it. Room 110 aka Goldberg room at the Library, 8:30am SHARP!!!!

On tuesday, we will be painting in class, so bring your painting supplies as well as another canvas to paint on, preferably one that you stretch yourself.

for our brother Martin

Martin Luther King should be thought of on a daily basis, not only on a holiday. Nonetheless, we will celebrated this brother tomorrow in class, painting. For those of us who choose to be in class,

we will met for breakfast together at Choklad around 8:30am. If Choklad cannot accommodate us, we'll take breakfast to class and start painting at 9:30. For those who would rather celebrate at home or elsewhere, please do so.

peace

day 4 . sylllabus change . homework . class assignment

Homework for tuesday Jan 12:
- Bring in 10 cropped shots of graffiti and/or screen shots of movies
- 30x30 stretched canvas
- all your paints, medium, brushes, palette, etc.

day 4/ Jan 12
Paint in class assignment - Paint "abstracted" cropped shots of graffiti on canvas, ie:

watch "Style Wars"/discussion of graffiti, breakdancing

Artists: Mark Bradford, Deb Grant, Doze Green, Christopher Wool, Tauba Auerbach

Homework for Mon Jan 18: - 3rd project
- text paintings (graffiti, lyrics), pattern, rhythm + repetition on record covers
- buy 9 vinyl records with cover from Salvation Army, Saver's, etc. ie:

- put the covers together in your own way
- Take no more than 8 words from your chosen lyrics and make a painting using its text
- Treat the color as if it were the instrumental track under the text
- Use both the colors of the record covers and paints.

-Read excerpt from Saul Williams' "The Dead Emcee Scrolls" TBA

2nd project + reading

Keeping in the vein of sampling and the prominent figure of the DJ within hip hop our readings will concentrate in the topic of artists that deal with these notions. The readings are excerpts from a book called Postproduction by Nicolas Bourriaud, a French art critic and curator currently working as the Gulbenkian curator of contemporary art at the Tate in London. He also wrote a very important book called Relational Aesthetics that is prequal to this one. Bourriaud also was co-director of the Palais de Tokyo between 1996 and 2006, a very interesting curatorial contemporary art museum in France. You are to read the following chapters:

.Introduction
.The Use of Forms

Reading found here or in the link section of the blog under his name.

2nd project - Paint a portion of your collage (either 6x6 or 6x4)
- if your collage is in color paint it in blacks, white and grays
- if your collage is in black and white paint it using only 3 colors
- Mix your colors to make more
- And of course, since you're painting it on 24x18 or bigger, you are blowing that part of the collage up.

Think about opacity, transparency, touch, tactility, juxtaposition, contrast, thick vs. thin, wet on wet, dry vs. wet...
Make sure you pick a part that is of interest to you and one that is interesting to paint. If you don't find it interesting chances are, no one will.

- bring lyrics of your favorite hip hop song to next class

Also three other things:

- The class as we found out today is being used more than we were told, so the schedule is like this:

Monday - our class is from 8 - 1pm
- Raja's is from 1 - 6pm

Tuesday - Rajas's is from 8 - 1pm
- ours is from 1 - 6pm

Wednesday + Thursday - no class in there until 1pm
- Lumin's class from 1 - 6pm

Friday and the weekend - no classes in there

Could you guys email me your answers to the questionnaire?

COULD PEOPLE EMAIL THE MP3'S OF THEIR SONGS TO ME? I'D LIKE TO MAKE A LIST OF THEM AND PERHAPS POST THEM IN THE TUMBLR ACCOUNT

*Schmitty can you email me, for some reason your account keeps bouncing back up.

peace
